Cocoa is a primary source of income for 5.5 million smallholder farmers and altogether provides livelihoods for between 40 and 50 million farmers, rural workers and their families in the Global South. In some countries up to 90 % of the farmers rely on cocoa for their primary income. However, many cocoa farmers and workers have to get by on less than 1.25 US dollars a day.
